RTFM To Save Your Idea

Jared took us all down memory lane last week with his post on Don’t RTFM. The flashback to video games and our eagerness to get home and start playing struck a chord with a lot of us.

Just to clear up any confusion between his post and mine, I fully agree with everything Jared had to say.

All too often we get suck behind ourselves and our need to feel like we know what we’re doing. We stand in our own way and the easiest way to get past this is to simply start. The ability to explore, fail, and figure things out are some of the best ways to learn, even if they are frustrating and time consuming.

But what happens after you press start?

You will reach a moment after you begin where you will need to make a decision. Your fumbling and learnings from putting yourself out there will have yielded you a decent amount of street smarts. At this point you will know more than enough function, but how will you take your craft to the next level?

There are things we can do to intentionally equip ourselves.

  • For developers, that could mean digging into documentation, APIs, or examples.
  • For designers, that could mean understanding color theory, layout principals like the rule of thirds, or white space balance.
  • For publishers, that could mean content structure, content strategy, hooking a reader into wanting to read more.

The line you cross will change everything. You’ll transition from functional to flourishing and, in a very real and tangible way, you begin to own your craft instead of your craft owning you.

The biggest enemies in this next level of education is time and direction. As with most things the easiest way to defeat that villan is to enter a cheat code. This is why we launched Press Start. Think of Press Start is like your own personal Game Genie.

Life is busy. Design, development, and publishing industries are innovating and evolving at breakneck speeds. Think of Press Start as your manual. It’s like an audiobook meets cliff notes meets experience, all in one.

By all means, press start on your idea. Don’t let it rot. But after you do, read the manual. Get better. Hone and enhance your skill and you might just unlock a killer new combo or finishing move.
